Common Name: Red Oak
Latin Name: Quercus rubra
Hardness: 1290 on the Jenka scale. This is one of the harder floors native to North America.
Appearance: Red oak is an open-grained hardwood. Light red to light pink with darker stripes, Northern Red Oak has a defined grain pattern developed by the long cold winters. Color variation will depend on the actual grade of the flooring chosen. Higher grades, such as select and better, will tend to be more consistent in color. Lower grades like natural, cabin or traditional, and common, will have more knots and more color variation. It is said that no two red oak floors look the same!
Color Change: Traditional hardwood floors, finished on the job with polyurethane, will yellow over time. This is referred to as patina. This doesn't happen with today's high-tech finishes. Red Oak flooring will darken slightly with time, depending on the exposure to sunlight.
Red Oak Source: Red Oak grows throughout Canada and the US, from the East coast to the Midwest. Red Oak harvested to produce Appalachian floors generally comes out of North Eastern US and South Eastern Canada.
